Encoding Our Text

Camera angle signifiers :

  • Loose frame shots will be used  to show victim is alone. we would use this camera shot in our shot number 4 as he is alone and vulnerable at this point.
  • Low angle shots of killer to show that he is more powerful.
  • High angle shots of victim to show that she/he are vulnerable and weak.
  • Canted angle shots to show disorientation and chaos.
  • Hand held camera shot to make the scene seem a bit creepy and distorted.
  • We willl show most of our shots as a POV so you are seeing it through the killers eyes.

Editing technique signifier:

  • We will use lots of quick short takes to represent the victim panicing and to show a sence of chaos.
  • Lots of long takes will be used also to keep the audience on the edge their seats and to build tension.
  • Could add sound effects to the scene for example a heartbeat, this will add suspence and tension.
  • Cross dissolves and fade effects will be used.
  • Change different colours to represent violence, blood, evil and danger.
  • We will change the colour and saturation of our scenes to hint at our genre.
lighting, costumes and music/sound signifier:

  • We will use low key lighting to make the scene look dark and dirty.
  • we will add a heart beat in to our opening sequence, this will last the whole duration and speed up and up the closer it gets to his victim dieing when it will eventually stop at the end.this wont stop atall.
  • dark casual clothig will be worn by the killer to mask his identity leaving narrative enigma in our opening sequence.

Analysis Of Research

This shows that people through the best title for our time was Vengeance or keeper and not what we had originality witch was twitch. As a group we will have decide which of the names are better and will it more. Doing this question has made us see that what we was going to call out opening sequence could of been misleading.

We can clear see that Abandoned Flats are the best for our Horror film and that parks would best to stay away from. ally and garages are still good areas however they where not top so i think it would be better to avoid them.

We can clearly see that everyone we asked through the killer should be male and no one sort it should be female. this could be down to how we have lay out the story bored or even that people don't think a women would play/fir this part well.

Nearly everyone thought that the victim should be Females and this could be down to normal in films they are seen as also need to be saved and always getting into trouble. only one person through the victim should be male and where has the goes agents what most people think and said i believe having  a male victim wouldn't affect the movie so much.

The picture aren't that clear but it was the title for the film. we can see that lot  more people like the blue intro more as it looks easy to read and more centered. also the effects with the words and the background let it stand out more and give it more depth.

Target Audience Descriptions

Age- We are targeting an audience of 18 and over mainly because the film would be
inappropriate for younger ages being a violent horror, although people watching this are likely to be in the 18-30 category as people above this age would have different tastes in film.

Occupation- As this is a realistic horror the people watching it are likely to have realistic lives as they acn emphasis with peoples situation more effectively thus improving the horror experience.

Hobbies and interests- The average horror film fan would enjoy our suspenseful horror film, they enjoy films which are similar to ours and are based around one antagonist who is a killer films similar to this that they would enjoy may include seven and a Nightmare on elm street.

Style-  People that want to watch a horror film usually haven't got an exciting life and are looking for gratification and gain this through watching horror films as horror films are designed to play on the audiences fear of something or the unknown, furthermore it is very rare for the audience to experience anything like what they view in a horror film.

What uses and gratifications will your film offer to your audience?
In our film will build suspense gradually and leave allot of unanswered questions such as why exactly is the character killing these people, what does he gain?, is there anyone telling him to do this.It will also supply the audience with a sense of intense realism through the use of realistic locations and continuity editing. Our horror film is also going to feature aspects of a psychological horror film as modern audiences tend to experience this type more in modern horror films. However we are not abandoning traditional horror conventions such as blood gore and violent deaths which is used correctly can guarantee a horror films success., this backed up by the fact that there have been several remakes of classic horror films such The wolf man(2010), The hills have eyes (2006) and the nightmare on elm street(2010).

What solutions will your film offer to their problem?
Our film will gratify our audience as they would want to escape from their boring lives this refers to the Dyer utopian solutions theory in which entertainment media provides solutions for the problems of their viewers. Our film follows the rules of this theory as our horror opening sequence is full of suspense and leaves allot of unanswered questions that create a sense of mystery all which increase and better the horror experience for the audience which is our ultimate aim.

Film Idea

When we plan to film our opening sequence i (nick) came up with the idea for the storyline as it was simple and effective and new if it was done in the right way that it would draw the viewer in and get them to feel like they are being watched. even tho we plan to do a horror film it was more of a history opening. This just meant we could leave the ending more open without having blood and gory everywhere.

The idea was simple.

It was a serial kill that targets young teens and follows them and then kills them.
I planed to go though loads of farm land and dirty trails however when i put the idea to the group we then say down and picked it apart. We then came up with the following from Wallington High Street and then take it part of the way that was on the old idea and finish it just as it gets onto the backroads so there is no one around to see what is about to happen.

We came up with filming the High Street with a POV shot of the killer walking down it looking for someone however then one of us said how about if he is still and watching and we went with that idea in stead. We always planned on using the bus as it is a everyday mode of transport that everyone can use and their for it shows that no one is safer because it doesn't matter id you use public transport or walk home.

So the idea then turned into having the killer sitting in Wallington High Street then walling down a ally following the victims and overall ending up getting on the bus with the victim. We then moved to our next location where we just planed to show shots of someone being followed and using the different levels and sounds to add to the effect.

When we got to the top of the street we planned to have the kill come out from behind a bush however when we filmed it we couldn't get the shots right so we decided to leave the ending open and on a cliff hanger. So we change it and had him hiding and looking as he walked past like something is about to happen.

So our idea changed a lot while we was out filming but working together to worked through what we saw as a problem so we end up with a killer that sits in the High Street and then picks his target follows him and then when his victim stops for a break he goes on ahead to plan where he is going to attack him or kill them. We used a radio on the when we was looking for sounds so it explain more of our story and you can see that the killer has done it before.

Representation In Films

Representation can be shown through a variety of ways which includes different genders, different ethnic groups, different classes and different ages. These can all be used to portray either an individual or a group of people in a stereotypical or non-stereotypical way.

Different Genders
Within horror films males are generally associated as being the villain. This is because men are often stereotyped as being strong, powerful, intelligent, brave, dominant and aggressive. Males are often used as the villain in horror films because most people see them as having power over women and it makes the film more convincing. An example of a male being in control and in power is in the horror film Saw as the man is disguised using a mask and has a male victim chained to the table. Although women are often stereotyped as being the weak and afraid ones, males are also sometimes featured as being the victim. Saw V is an example of this as the victim is a man chained down to a table and close up shots of his face have been used to show how afraid and scared he is. However in most cases woman are commonly associated as being the victim in horror films as they are stereotyped as being weak, afraid, feminine, powerless, emotional, material and not in control. One reason because of this is the way that women react and act to pain as they scream a lotmore than men. An example of this is in the opening sequence of Skream 4 is when the girl skreams as her friend gets stabbed.Women are also commonly seen as being very vulnerable and an easier victim to capture for the villain.

Different Ages
Within horror films ages vary from being very young such as a teenager to being much older such as an adult. Adults are commonly stereotyped as being the villain in horror movies as they are often seen as being the most experienced and intelligent in life and have much more knowledge of what they are doing than younger poeple such as teenagers. Older people are also seen as being much more powerful for example in the horror film Nightmare On Elm Street (2010) the villain is a male adult who kills many youths and teenagers as they are much more vulnerable and easier to kill. Younger people such as children are seen as being sweet, innocent, caring and reliant on others for care. Teenagers are shown as being more aggressive, lazy, violent and getting in trouble for crime. Examples of this are such films as Disturbia where the teenage boy named Kale gets in trouble for punching his teacher because of what he said about his dad.

Different Classes
Classes are represented in different ways depending on the genre. In horror films lower-class/working-class people are often represented as being aggressive, lazy, lonely, depressed, sad and criminalistic. An example of this is in the film is in Saw as the villain gets extremely paranoid when people dont appreciate life therefore he decides to go crazy and thinks they deserve to be torured or killed in the most painfulest ways. In contrast, people who are middle class in a horror film usually live a normal life and behave in a happy, good, clever and kind. Examples of this are in the opening sequence of the film Skream 4 where the two girls are enjoying themselves at home having a conversion about horror movies and what they like about them. Rich people in horror films often seem to have a lot of power over people and get bored of what to do so in some cases they may go crazy and decide to kill people purely for entertainment. An example of this includes the film called "The Human Centipede" where the villain captures his three victims even though he lives in a huge house.

Different Ethnic Groups
Black people are often represented in horror films as being the weak and vulnerable ones. They often play the role of a police officer who is meant to be powerful and in control however in most cases the villain ends up killing them. Asian/half cast people in horror films are represented as being powerful, aggressive, in control, dominant and strong. An example of this is in Saw 5 where there are 5 people fighting to get a key to free themselves and whilst everyone is panicking the asian guy isn't worried at all and goes straight for his key. White people are often represented as being the hero in a horror film especially male white people. This is because they are stereotyped as being strong, dominant, poweful and in control.

Analysis of "Saw V" Opening Sequence

In order to analyse the opening sequence of Saw V I will look at the different techniques that have been used for the genre.

Sound
At the beginning of the video there is non-diagetic sound such as a screetching noise that sounds like metal is being scratched. This introduces the genre as it is a painful sound to listen to and hints that the film is horror. The sound then gradually changes from the non-diagetic sound of screetching to a guy breathing heavily which sounds like he is panicing. This creates tension and makes the audience think that something is going to happen to this man. There is also some dialogue of the man swearing which creates a sense of worriness and we then hear the villain talking through a tv to the victim.

Mise-En-Scene
I think the location within this opening sequence is the key to creating a real sense of horror and is what makes the genre obvious. For example, it is in a dark empty room which looks like a dungeon or sewer and features a variety of creepy objects such as traps, weapons, an old tv and chains.

The fact that the man is chained to a table and unable to move suggests that he has been kidnapped and leads the audience into thinking what will happen next. There are also cuts from the mans panicking face to the swinging saw above him which hints that the man is going to be sawed in half.

The fact that the man also has tattoos all over his body signifies to the audience that this man may be irresponsible and therfore could have taken people lives and now he is paying for it. His facial expression also tells us that he is very scared and afraid of death as he is breathing heavily and looks helpless. The clothing that he is also wearing tells us that he is quite a dark person. For example, he is wearing dark black trousers/jeans which could represent evil, violence and crime.

There are also many blood and gore scenes which within this opening sequence that make it hard to watch which means that people who enjoy watching horror films will enjoy it.

Editing
Low-key lighting has been used around the room to make it seem dark and isolated. There is also some light visible on the man and the table which makes the audience focus on that more. This also creates a sense of mysteriousness as there isn't much else that you are able to see.

There are constant cuts between the man and the machines that he is chained to which shows the audience what is going on. There is also another technique that has been used where the camera zooms out of the man whilst spinning. This creates a sense of movement and builds up tension to what could happen next.

In addition, some cuts have been used from the man to the clock which signifies to the audience how long the man has left until he dies. This makes it exciting as it makes it seem like it is all happening so fast.

Camera
Towards the beginning of the clip a close up shot has been used of the mans face to show his facial expression (worried, afraid and scared). It then cuts to a medium close up behind his head to show that he is chained to a table and unable to move. A panning technique has also been used in this shot to make the scene flow smoothly. We then see an aerial view of the man chained to a table and two machines that are next to his hands. Another cut is used from the aerial shot to a medium shot which shows the room that he is in (dark, isolated, abandoned).

Further on in the clip we see a shot/reverse shot between the mans face and the man on the tv screen. This hints that the man on the tv screen is the villain. Many high angle shots have also been used looking down on the man chained to the table. This makes him look weak, unpowerful and useless. In contrast, there is a shot of another man on a TV screen which shows that he is incontrol and powerful.

Titles
In the beginning of the clip the title starts with a zoom in affect as the text comes closer and closer to the screen. A flare has also been used that moves across the text horizontally making it bright and stand out.
The font that has been used is light and contrasts with the background as it is dark such as black. The text also looks like metal which relates to the sound that is being played during the title which is the sound of metal being scratched. The titles are also centered which keeps your eyes focused on reading the what the titles say. At the end of each title it slowly fades to black which makes it seem more dramatic and scary.

Dominant Ideologies
The man that is killed in this clip is represented as being weak, vulnerable and afraid as he is eventually killed. Although he looks strong he is not able to move from the chains which makes him seem less like a stereotypical man (brave, strong, not afraid). Instead he is the opposite to all of those things.

Analysis of 'Shaun of the Dead' Opening Sequence

Shaun of the Dead

In order to analyse the opening sequence to Shaun of the Dead (Edgar Wright, 2004) I will be looking at the different features that represent comedy within the clip.

Sound
There is non-diegetic music throughout the clip which is low pitched but funky and catchy. The music is used in a way that sometimes matches with the scene and sometimes doesn’t. This may have been done to signify to the audience that the film is a comedy. For example, in one scene there are a bunch of characters bobbling their heads and the music is synchronised with this. Towards the end there is also some diegetic sound as the two men are speaking to eachother. This is called dialogue and an example of this is "aint you got work".

MISE-EN-SCENE
Within this clip the mise en scene is what signifies to the audience that this is film is a comedy. Throughout the clip there are different scenes, some each include a group of people who are all dressed the same or doing the same thing. An example of this is when a group of people are dancing at the same time as well as wearing very similar clothing. This is shown in different ways and creates a sense of craziness because everything is the same.Towards the end there is a scene where two full grown men are sitting on the sofa playing video games. The room that they are in is very untidy and junk is all over the place which signifies that the two men are irresponsible.

Another example of people being the same is when a group of men dressed in smart clothing, all pull out their mobile at the same time. This causes the audience to be confused as it comes across in a strange way that isn’t very understandable.

Editing
At the start of the clip there is a swipe from a black screen to the following scene which makes the clip flow. This also contrasts with the following scene as the man pushing the trolly is moving in the opposite direction to the swipe. Throughout the clip there are also various push outs which are frequently used to make the scenes flow. An example of this is when there is a push out from the women working to the men dressed in smart clothing pulling out their mobile phones. This represents men and women as being different as all of the people working in the shop are women whereas the men are all standing in a line queuing for something.

Camera
A variety of wide shots have been used to capture a fairly large amount or group of people in one shot. Every shot is continuously moving (pan) which makes the clip seem like it is doing the same thing over and over. This has been done to show what the town is about and slightly confuses the audience as the shots are always moving.

A high angle of a man’s bear feet is shown which makes him look lazy as he is walking slowly and looks like he is struggling to stand up. In addition, a zoom shot is shown of the two men sitting down playing video games on a couch. This suggests to the audience that the characters are lazy and unsociable as they have just woken up.

Titles
Towards the start there is text overlapping a small part of the scenes towards the bottom which features the cast and movie company. The font is bold and clear but yet slightly textured to make it look like there is blood on the text. The film title is then shown on the floor in one of the following scenes as there are people walking along nodding their heads in synchronization to the non-diegetic music. This creates a sense of comedy and craziness about the film as there are people dancing whilst there is text on the floor with blood on it.

Conventional Elements
This clip has included a variety of conventions of opening sequences including
• Film credits and titles
• Non-Diegetic Music
• Diegetic sound (dialogue)
• Film Company Name

Analysis of "Dawn of the Dead" Opening Sequence

The clip that I have analysed can been viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmyWfp2aFkc
This is due to embedding being disabled by the user who posted this clip.

In order to analyse the opening sequence of Dawn of the Dead I will look at the key elements that make up the genre.

Sound
At the very beginning of the video there is diagetic sound of a low pitched horn. There is also a short amount of seconds where you see and here some diagetic sound such as a croud of people shout something at the same time which isn't very clear. There are also some sounds effects such as a blood splatter as the titles are shown. This creates a sense of horror as blood is something that is seen in most horror films. You can also here a woman screaming and a man shouting afterwards. This sound is quite loud and gives the audience a shock as they didn't expect it. There is also some dialogue such as "are these people dead or alive". The word dead hints the that the genre of this film is horror and leaves you wanting to know what that person is referring to.

After the first 45 seconds of the clip some non-diagetic music suddenly starts which consists of a man talking calmly and a guitar. This seems unordinary and is slightly missleading as it suggests that the film may be a comedy when its actually a horror film.

Mise-En-Scene
The mise en scene makes the genre of the film clear to the audience as we see close ups of peoples faces which are covered in blood. There is also much havoc and chaos going on within the clip which signifies that the world is havinga crisis. The fact that people are all being violent suggests that the genre is horror.

The location of the movie is in a city as there are constant explosions to show chaos. There are also numerous shots of blood and gore. The peoples facial expressions are all worried, afraid and confused. This creates a sense of horror as there is no happiness within the clip. Lots of people are running in the clip which creates a sense of movement and adrenaline. This builds up and leads the audience into thinking something big will happen.

Editing
There are numerous shots within this clip that have been edited to look like an old fashion TV. This effect is called Bad TV. There are also constant cuts to the different things that are happening all over the city. A lot of the shots have also been slightly distorted to make them look blurry and confusing. Fast jump cuts have been used to show how disorientated the characters are. For example, there are many jump cuts of a womans face with blood on it which have been used to show how violent and aggressive she is or that she could be a villain.

Some shots of the clip have been sped up to show more distortion and make the clip run smoothly. This also gets the audiences attention as so many shots are seen all at once.

Camera
A large variety of different camera angles and shot sizes have been used. The long shots and medium shots are mostly of lots of people moving around. This could suggest that they are running from something and are afraid which relates to the genre of the film (Horror). We also see some camera pans. For example, there is a camera pan around someones house to show how damaged it is and that it is on fire. An aerial shot has been used above a crowd of people which signifies that they are weak, not in control and not very powerful. A zoom in on a truck heading towards people suggests that the truck is going to hit them. This also hints that the genre of the film is horror as there is violence going on. Different angles of close ups on peoples faces have been used to show distortion and emphasize the blood on their face and their facial expressions. Towards the end of the clip a point of view shot has been used showing the camera man filming people attacking him. This creates a sense of realism for the audience and makes them feel that they are the ones being attacked.

Titles
All of the titles in this opening sequence are bright a bold which contrasts with the black background to make the text stand out. The fact that the colour of the text is red suggests violence, blood and evil and hints that the genre of the film is horror. There is also an effect on the text which makes it look like blood is being splattered on the screen and makes the audience focus on the title and credits more. The credits are shown very quickly to show how fast the world is changing in this film. The titles are also quite small which could be to represent how small the world has because due to people dying

Conventional Elements
  • Titles and credits
  • Non diegetic music
  • Hints as to what the genre is. An example of this is the titles as they are red which represents blood and violence
  • Narrative enigma has been used leaving the audience with some unanswered questions such as how it all happened and why it has happened

Conventions of Opening Sequences

1.Shaun Of The Dead (Title)
In the opening sequence of shaun of the dead we see the that the title is displayed within a scene on the floor. This relates to the film as the title is referring to the people who are in this scene as they are about to walk over the title. The title is also bright which contrasts with the rest of the scene and makes it stand out to the audience more.

2.Dawn of the Dead (Credits)
In the opening sequence of the film Dawn of the Dead the credits are shown name by name. The text colour is red which relates to the genre of the film as red is often associated with things like blood, evil, violence and danger. The background of the credits is black which represents evil and darkness and hints that the genre of this movie is horror. In the clip there is also a title effect which looks like the text is blood and gets ripped off the screen.

3.Jaws (Sound)
In the opening sequence of Jaws there is non-diagetic sound. The sound is two strong and deep notes which are repeated numerous times whilst getting faster. This makes the audience feel excited as it helps them to believe that something terrible is going to happen. For example, at the part where the woman is swimming, the sound that is played gets faster and faster and stops just as she is pulled under water by the shark. The sound used in this clip is appropriate with the genre (thriller) as it creates a lot of tension between the film and the audience and builds up the audiences excitement. The sound then stops making the audience feel relaxed when all of a sudden something shocking happens which thrills the audience as they don't expect it.

Jaws opening sequence link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8SnZmUjhAA

4.The Hangover (Narrative Enigma)
In the opening sequence of The Hangover narrative enigma has been used. This is because it leaves the audience with a lot of unanswered questions which makes them want to watch the rest of the film to find out. An example of this is that it doesn't tell you all of the things that happen in vegas and how doug ends up getting lost. From watching the opening sequence of The Hangover the storyline is not completely obvious and leaves the audience guessing and makes them feel excited as to what will happen next.

Research Into Genre (Horror)

Research Into Genre

Conventions of Horror

Colours are a very important convention in the genre of horror. This is because Colours can represent various things such as a characters personality, the theme, to show mood, and can be used to represent things in a way to make the audience feel worried and afraid.Generally in horror films, dark colours will be used as these colours create a sense of darkness and can make the audience feel insecure or scared. Bright Colours such as red can also be used to represent danger as the colour is usually linked to evil, blood and danger.

Common locations that are used in the genre horror are often small areas such as dark alleyways, small streets, tunnels, rough estates and areas where people are isolated. Abandoned houses can also be used in horror films for villains to hide their victims. Locations will also often be mysterious to make the audience feel curious and sympathize with a character that explores them. Also dark and fairly large places can also be used such as a forest.

In horror films weapons are a key prop to making a horror film scary. Weapons range from knifes, daggers, chainsaws, guns etc. Weapons such as a dagger or a machete can help the audience to understand the genre of the film and identify that it is horror. They are also so used to identify a character such as the villain.

The costumes that are used in horror films vary as the villain isn't always the same. For example, to represent the villain in a mysterious and curious way that blends in with society, he or she would wear casual clothing so that people don't suspect him. In contrast, a stereotypical villain that is obvious to identify would dress in dark clothing and been hidden in disguise using such things as a mask or hoody. The dark clothing suggests that the character is a dark and evil person and makes them look mysterious.

Non diegetic sound can be used in horror films to create tension and thrill the audience. For example, fast paced, high pitched music makes the audience thrilled as it makes them feel that something big and bad is about to happen. Diegetic sound can be used in horror films to scare the audience and make them feel as though they are in the film. An example of this is a creaking door that slowly opens which could thrill the audience if something jumped out of it.

The fonts that are used in horror films are usually distorted in some way. They may also sometimes have effects on the font such as blood scattered across the text which signifies to the audience what the genre is.

Conventional actors

Often actors that are used in horror films as the villain are middle aged or quite old (adults). This is because adults are usually more experienced in using weapons and have more reasons for what they are doing. Teenagers are usually used as the victims as they are the most vulnerable and come across as being weak, confused and an easy victim.

Themes

Themes that tend to be tackled in horror films include revenge, mental illnesses and opinion. Films such as saw explore the theme of opinion as the main villain captures his victims and chooses them on what his opinion is of them and what they have done in reality. For example, if someone doesn't appreciate life or takes life for granted than the villain will capture them.

Audiences enjoy watching horror films because of the adrenaline and thrills they gain from it. Horror films are also quite interesting to watch as its not obvious what's going to happen and it usually builds up very slowly to give the audience something to look forward to and keep them watching the film.

PRELIMINARY TASK EVALUATION

How Filming Went
We started filming this task in a school corridor and then moved on to a room. I believe that the overall task went well as we were consistant with our filming and our use of the camera was good. We filmed everything that we were supposed to film within a small amount of time, roughly 3 hours. We also setup the camera using the tripod and took various shots from different views for use when editing.

How Editing Went
Editing went extremely well as we were able to add various effects using final cut pro. We also included all of the editing techniques which are required. This made the overall video look better and as a group we made decisions about which effects to use and which worked best. The editing was fairly easy and we did it in a short amount of time. However, one of the group members was ill meaning that we were unable to edit the rest of the clip without him.

Problems You Encountered
As a group we did encounter some small problems such as where to film and who was going to act. Although we were eventually able to solve this, we were slightly short of the amount of film we needed and had to go back and film again. However, we couldn't do this because of continuity as the actors were wearing different clothing and weren't in the same position. The story we came up with took some thinking and had to retake many shots to insure they were correct.

Strengths of the Prelim
We had a large amount of space to film our prelim as we did it in the graphics corridor. This allowed us to film most of our video without any continuity errors as there weren't many people who walked in whilst we were filming. The room was also quiet which meant that we had no sound issues and the filming didn't take very long.

Weaknesses of the Prelim
Although we were able to produce our video without any continuity errors, there were some that we had to re-film as people sometimes got in the way of the camera and things were moved around a lot. It also took us some time to think of what we were going to film and what people were going to say. People also often forgot their dialogue which meant that we had to re-film various scenes.

What you will remember to do the same next time
Next time we will remember to include various effects that we know work well and will use the tripod to gain a smoother shot whilst filming.

What you will remember to do differently next time
Next time we will remember to film all of our video before moving onto editing and plan a bit more before moving onto filming.

Changing Our Film Idea

When we when to film our idea the main problem was that we didn't have the actors that we needed at the time. This meant that we had to change our entire idea. However, we were able to counter this as one of the group members in our group (Nick Burford) came up with the idea that we could film the opening sequence from the villains perspective. I also had to draw a new storyboard for our new film idea which was based on a teenage boy that is followed by a villain. As a group we decided that I would be the best actor for the victim and Nick took the role of being the villain as he wasn't featured as much.  To make it so that the villains actors face could not be seen much we disguised him in dark clothing with his head always looking down. This also made the villain seem more mysterious. All of the blog posts on my blog that ay (old) in the title means that, that post was based on our old film idea and the posts that don't are the ones for our new film idea which we used.

Encoding Our Text (old)

Camera angle signifiers :
  • Loose frame shots will be used  to show victim is alone. we would use this camera shot in our shot number 12 as it is the victim tied up on her own in a big room.
  • Low angle shots of killer to show that he is more powerful.
  • High angle shots of victim to show that she/he are vulnerable and weak.
  • Canted angle shots to show disorientation and chaos.
  • Hand held camera shot of the killer walking towards the victim carrying  a knife in shot number 15
Editing techniques:
  • We will use lots of quick short takes to represent the victim panicing and to show a sence of chaos.
  • Lots of long takes will be used also to keep the audience on the edge their seats and to build tension.
  • Could add sound affects to the scene, this will add suspence and tension.
  • Change different colours to represent violence, blood, evil and danger.
lighting, costumes and music/sound:
  • We will use low key lighting to make the scene look dark and dirty.
  • we will add a heart beat in to our opening sequence, this will last the whole duration and speed up and up the closer it gets to his victim dieing when it will eventually stop at the end. this will stop at the end of shot number 16
  • dark casual clothig will be worn by the killer to mask his identity leaving narrative enigma in our opening sequence.
  • Knife is always shown through a zoom before the death of a character.

FOCUS GROUP (old)

This is our video of the focus group. We asked these people a thew questions about horror films in general, what their opinions are of them and what they thought about our storyboard. The video has also been edited so that only the relevant parts are shown and some title effects have been used to make it clear what we are asking them and to help people understand more.
